What Happens Inside Your Body When You Get a Fever?

Fever is one of the body's most powerful defense mechanisms. Many people think fever is the illness itself, but that's not true. A fever is actually a sign that your immune system is actively fighting an infection.

Whether the infection is caused by a virus, bacteria, or another microorganism, your body responds in a fascinating way to help eliminate the threat.

Let's understand what happens inside your body when a fever develops.

Step 1: Germs Enter Your Body

The process begins when harmful microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites enter your body.

Your immune system immediately recognizes these germs as foreign invaders. White blood cells are activated and begin attacking the infection.

Step 2: Your Immune Cells Send Chemical Messages

As your immune system fights the infection, immune cells release chemicals called pyrogens. These include inflammatory molecules such as Interleukin-1 (IL-1), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF), and Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).

These chemical messengers travel through the bloodstream and reach a small part of your brain called the hypothalamus, which acts as your body's thermostat.

Step 3: Your Brain Raises Your Body Temperature

The hypothalamus receives these signals and increases your body's temperature "set point."

Although your actual temperature may still be normal, your brain now thinks your body is too cold compared to the new set point.

That's why you suddenly start feeling cold.

Step 4: Chills and Shivering Begin

To increase your body temperature, several things happen at once:

  • Your muscles begin to shiver, producing heat.
  • Blood vessels in your skin become narrower (vasoconstriction) to reduce heat loss.
  • You develop goosebumps.
  • You feel cold and may wrap yourself in blankets.

These responses continue until your body reaches the new, higher temperature.

Step 5: The Higher Temperature Helps Your Immune System

A moderate fever is believed to support your body's defense by:

  • Slowing the growth of certain bacteria and viruses.
  • Enhancing the activity of white blood cells.
  • Improving communication between immune cells.
  • Making it more difficult for some microorganisms to multiply.

This is one reason why doctors don't always recommend treating every mild fever immediately—especially if the person is otherwise stable.

Why Do You Feel Weak During a Fever?

When you have a fever, your body is working harder than usual.

More energy is used to power your immune response, while inflammation affects your muscles and brain. As a result, you may experience:

  • Weakness
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Sleepiness

These symptoms are part of your body's natural response to infection.

Why Do You Sweat When the Fever Breaks?

Once your immune system gains control of the infection—or after fever-reducing medication is taken—the hypothalamus lowers your body's temperature set point back to normal.

Your body then begins to cool itself by:

  • Sweating
  • Widening blood vessels in the skin (vasodilation)
  • Releasing excess heat

This is why many people sweat heavily when a fever starts to come down.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Seek medical attention if:

  • Fever is 39.4°C (103°F) or higher in adults.
  • Fever lasts for more than 2–3 days without improvement.
  • There is difficulty breathing, severe headache, confusion, seizures, persistent vomiting, or a stiff neck.
  • An infant younger than 3 months has a temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher.
  • You develop signs of dehydration such as dizziness, very little urine, or inability to drink fluids.
